Paraguay's Guarani To Request Points After Rock Attack Suspends Game With Cerro Porteno

Cerro Porteno and Guarani remain locked in battle after an attack on Guarani's keeper resulted in Sunday's match suspension.
Incensed Guarani officials will ask the Paraguayan FA to award them all three points from their encounter against Cerro Porteno, which was suspended after goalkeeper Pablo Aurrecochea was struck on the head by a rock thrown by opposition fans.

Sunday's game was stopped before the first kick-off when Aurrecochea, warming up in front of the hardcore Cerro fans, was hit by the projectile and left with a three-centimetre gash in the head. The Guarani team immediately left the field claiming that their goalkeeper could no longer play and the referee could not guarantee the safety of the players, and after some confusion official Ulises Mereles declared the game postponed.

Later the club president Juan Alberto Acosta affirmed that his side would be requesting the game to be recorded as a win in their favour.

"[Aurrecochea] could no longer stand up, now we will hand in a request for the points, of course, [the goalkeeper] couldn't stand. We will be demanding the points as the situation merits," Acosta told 780 AM on Sunday night.

In response, Decano club doctor Ramon Garay refuted Guarani claims, asserting that the real injuries were caused by the acrimonious transfer of Jonathan Fabbro over the summer and that the request is their rival's method of gaining revenge.

"The game should be played. Cerro will defend their position to play it again, it is strange what Guarani are asking for", Garay fired on 100.1FM

"They are trying to take this onto political fields because of the Fabbro saga. We already knew it, they are bleeding for that injury."
